Braintree Forest Phonics
Code Level Readers

The purpose of these Code Level texts is to strip back all content other than the target phoneme to grapheme correspondences and Code Mapped high-frequency words. This helps the student focus on each word (rather than trying to guess what they could be eg from the illustrations) and as the graphemes are from their Code Level they will recall them more easily, and therefore find blending easier. They will move from the first word on the page to the last feeling able to complete the task, even if not as quickly as they might like. They can even talk and think about the MEANING! This is difficult when a huge amount of working memory is being used to get from one word to the next. This approach is really powerful in the very early stages of learning to read, especially when there are learning differences that could make decoding more difficult eg if the student has poor phonemic awareness. Some children hardly need these Code Level texts at all - it is important to be aware of how they are processing information. Some children become really good at predicting what the words are, and this can be useful - ask the student to then 'duck hand' the word and map the speech sounds to the sound pics (graphemes) This will help with spelling (encoding) skills and make sure they are constantly paying attention to the way speech sounds are represented on paper!
Over 90% will be off these before the middle of year 1 (and over 80% able to pass the UK phonics screener check before the end of reception) We are using a scaffolded, systematic speech to print approach to teaching phonics, as the foundation from which children learn to 'self-teach' - and explore the whole code. The 100 or so graphemes covered in the 4 Code Levels is only around 25% of the total number of phoneme to grapheme correspondences used in written English. The sooner they recognise and use these the better.
